Maggie, Thank you so much! That makes more sense than anything that I have read so far. I really love our goats and try to everthing I know to help them. This website is the greatest thing ever invented. Thanks again. |

Single kid? Dam have alot of milk? Many does will push their kids to nurse they overfeed them giving them scours (colostrum is very laxative). You giving the nutridrench (with its sugar content) after the scours started, may not have helped with relieving the problem, kaopectate may have been a better option. The kid was a bit young to have died of an infection. Infections (Both bacterial and viral) have to have time to incubate, usually about 3 to 5 days. I still lean toward an overfed kid (and does will do that to relieve the pressure in their udders) who developed a metabolic imbalance and dehydration due to diarrhea. Goats bred for milk production can raise their own kids but may need for you to also milk to help with all that "production" until they adjust to the relatively small demand that a single kid makes. |

We used the iodine on the cord at birth. Mother is fine no fever. She misses her baby. No signs of stress. Today she went out to eat with the other goats. We have had goats for about a year and everyone that I know gives CDT at birth. I had wondered about that. But, the man we bought our herd from said thats what he did. So I guess we were just following his advice. Goats are such odd creatures anyway. One day they are just fine and the next they are at the brink of death it seems there is no in between. We spend many hours just watching them and always seem to miss something. Even with the fans in the top of the barn going I think that it is just to hot. 90 degree days takes its toll on the little ones along with the humidity. Thanks for your help. |

I read other places also that the CDT does no good soon after birth. Thats why the instructions on the vial say wait until 6-8 weeks. I was thinking the kid might of had bacterial problems. Maybe from the mothers milk. Is the mother doing ok? Any fever? Also could the baby have picked up some type of bacteria thru the umbilical cord at birth? Iodine is normally applied to the umbilical right after birth for protection. |

This kid was on his mother. We hadn't given him the nutridrench until he got the scours. Thanks for your help. |

Were you bottle feeding? Often kids that are over fed a powdered milk replacer (especially one for calves or lambs) will scour so bad as to die. Giving a vaccine at birth does no good. For a vaccine to work the animal (or person) being given the vaccine must have a functioning immune system. A goat's immune system does not begin to develop until about 6 to 8 weeks with it being fully developed around 10 to 12 weeks. When a kid suckles the first milk (colostrum) which is rich in antibodies these serve as its "immune system" until the kids own system develops. Giving a vaccine may actually do more harm than good, using up those antibodies given by the doe. That is why you vaccinate the doe before she kids, to boost the antibodies in her colostrum. Nutridrench has alot of sugar in it, sugar can make nutritionally caused diarrhea worse. |

I had a lamacha kid born and at 14 hours old it had the scours. We gave nutridrench and some scour hault for pigs very small amount. We give CDT and Bo-se at birth. This kid died about 9 hours later. I have never seen one that young have scours that bad. Has anyone else seen this in their kids. We have 10 more does yet to kid. Is there anything else we could have done? |
